National Clinical Guidelines for Management of Common Mental Disorders
Ministry of Health | Ministry of Health
Abstract
Kenya's Mental Health Policy and Clinical Guidelines seek to improve access to comprehensive, integrated, and high-quality mental health services by strengthening the health system and equipping healthcare workers to manage common mental disorders. Recognizing the substantial burden of mental, neurological, and substance use disorders, as well as persistent challenges such as inadequate services, workforce shortages, stigma, and discrimination, the guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment, and referral of common mental health conditions across the life course. Designed for use by non-specialist healthcare providers, they cover both psychosocial and pharmacological interventions for conditions including depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, neurocognitive disorders, child and adolescent mental health conditions, sleep disorders, psychiatric emergencies, and maternal mental illness, thereby helping to bridge Kenya's mental health treatment gap.
